How eBPF is evolving container networking

Bill Doerrfeld | March 3, 2025

My latest feature on InfoWorld explores how eBPF is disrupting the status quo for container networking.

Is eBPF the future of container networking? It's certainly shaking things up...

Containers are designed to be isolated—that's great for security but tricky for networking. eBPF is rewriting the rules, working at the kernel-level, and optimizing performance by cutting out the heavy network stack.

As Liz Rice, Chief Open Source Officer at Isovalent, told me, "With eBPF, we can bypass parts of these superfluous networking stacks."

For my latest InfoWorld feature, I spoke with top minds in the space about how eBPF is transforming container networking, who's adopting it, what challenges remain, and where else eBPF is making an impact.

Huge thanks to everyone who contributed their insights.
